I read the Gabriel García Marquez novel but it's been like a decade and a half -- I don't remember the fish connection, what was it?

My birthday is in March, Dane bought me the necklace just because....which is the nicest reason!
I haven't read 100 years of solitude in a while either, but from what I remember there is the invisible ghost grandfather character that sits in the workshop room making golden fish described EXACTLY how the fish on that necklace looks.
